Waycarbon conducts an unprecedented mapping of emissions from the Brazilian oil and gas sector

WayCarbon carried out a project to map the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 37 companies that are part of the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP), an institutional representative of the sector that has been operating for 65 years in favor of the development of this industry, in regulatory and institutional aspects. The work relied on specialists from Consultancy and the use of Climas, ESG Management and Climate Management software developed by the company.

The project highlighted the emissions from the oil and gas sector in Brazil, which had not been individually mapped in the national inventory and therefore had their impact not clearly disclosed. In addition, it generated an evolution in the management of this information. “Discussions with IBP members were very fruitful, mainly about possible improvements in inventories and the identification of sector indicators, which continues to be a challenge due to the variety of activities carried out”, says Eloisa Casadei, from Mitigation team at WayCarbon.

The results of the work were presented by Julia Rymer, Mitigation Manager at WayCarbon, during Rio Oil & Gas 2022, the largest event in the sector in Latin America, held between September 26th and 29th, in Rio de Janeiro. “In this first survey, carried out with IBP associates, we identified the representativeness of the segments of O&G sector, in order of impact: downstream, with 52%; upstream, with 42%; and midstream, with 7%. This mapping will serve to assess cost-effective measures for decarbonization”, concluded Julia Rymer, Mitigation Manager at WayCarbon and one of the speakers.
