WayCarbon to attend COP28

Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, will host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) from november 30 to December 12. Aimed at fulfilling the pillars of the Paris Agreement, the event will focus on four paradigm shifts: accelerating the energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030; delivering on old promises and setting the framework for a new financial agreement; putting nature, people, lives, and livelihoods at the center of climate action; and mobilizing stakeholders for a more inclusive COP.

The macroeconomic scenario is challenging, marked by wars, high interest rates, and inflation in most markets, issues that distract from the urgency of avoiding the climate crisis. In addition, the fact that the meeting is being held in one of the world’s largest oil producers is a cause for concern, as the burning of fossil fuels is the source of a significant portion of global emissions. There are fears of a repeat of COP27, where attempts to get countries to stop using fossil fuels were unsuccessful.

“The complexity and cost of finding, extracting, refining and transporting oil is remarkable, but these costs are diluted by the huge volume of fossil fuels produced, reflecting high global demand. On the other hand, the climate reality shows us that the world needs a cost-effective, low-carbon energy solution to replace oil, even if only partially,” says Felipe Bittencourt, CEO of WayCarbon, in an article published in O Globo newspaper.

In a second article for EPBR, the executive also commented on other issues that will be highlighted at the conference. “Many countries are expected to update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) during COP28, committing to more ambitious emission reduction targets. This is where the world will truly measure the success of the conference,” said Bittencourt.

WayCarbon’s delegation at the event will include Felipe Bittencourt (CEO), Luisa Valentim (Head of Business Development), Melina Amoni (Climate Risk and Adaptation Manager) and Bruna Araújo (Sustainable Finance Manager).
